Our Lady of Lourdes

The Solemn Opening was performed on 13th September 1931 by His Grace, Dr. Downey, the Archbishop of Liverpool. While regretting that the parish had no school attached at that time due to the bewildering regulations from the Board of Education, he said that it had been felt prudent to open the church first in the hope that the education clouds would soon move away and that building could begin in a short time. He continued with thanks to all who had co-operated with Fr. Francis in a very uphill undertaking and expressed his great joy at the way in which his new-found parishioners had rallied around him. Nevertheless Dr. Downey felt that he had to stress that all who dwelt within the confines of the parish had a strict obligation to support it. 'You have the Parish Priest, you have all the others who are working together for the good of the new parish. So if there be any here who have not realised their obligations to the new parish and that their loyalty is to their new parish church, I hope that from this time onwards they will realise it and come forward to help where help is needed'. He went on to thank the many people who dwelt outside the parish and yet had given very great assistance to the new parish.

1932 saw the holding of Sunday School, each Sunday afternoon, and during the same year a number of societies were established, these included the Catholic Women's League and the S.V.P. Society.
